Man accused of murder following 'disturbance' nearly four years ago

A man has appeared before a judge after being charged with murder following an incident nearly four years ago. Dean Hughes, 46, was charged with the murder of Shane Maloney after police were called to a 'disturbance' in Leigh.

Mr Maloney was assaulted in November 2019 and died 15 months later. Hughes appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Monday morning for a preliminary hearing.

today Judge Nicholas Dean KC, the Honorary Recorder of Manchester, told the defendant: "This hearing is called a preliminary hearing, it is necessary only because the magistrates, when they sent this case involving an allegation of murder to the crown court, have no power to deal with an application for bail that may be made.
