High-flying Liam Scales is ready to cap his stunning Celtic run with a first outing for the Republic of Ireland. The defender’s fabulous progress has landed him a recall to his national team squad for Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Greece.
Scales’ recent performances have brought gushing praise from his bosses at both club and country. Celtic gaffer Brendan Rodgers went as far as to say the 25-year-old’s excellence has been “one of the biggest surprises” in his coaching career.Irish manager Stephen Kenny has also been excited by Scales’ ascent having watched him in Champions League action against Lazio six days ago.
Pat Bonner won 80 caps for the Republic and Kenny contacted him straight after the Euro showdown with the Italians to outline his thoughts.
The former Celt believes Scales’ displays have done enough to get him a place in the line-up against the Greeks in Dublin or in the away clash with Gibraltar on Monday.Bonner said: “For a player who was out of the team, maybe didn’t know if he had a future at Celtic and perhaps felt that he would have to go and find another club, to go in there and do so well has been fantastic.
