West Yorkshire Police has issued an update after violent disorder broke out in a Leeds suburb on Thursday night (July 18). The force confirmed that "several" people have been arrested after officers were attack and vehicles were set on fire in the Harehills area of the city.

The disorder was sparked when social workers were met with "hostility" over a child protection matter, according to police. The force said officers were "attacked" and the social service staff involved in the incident had to be removed from the area for their safety.

The force then deployed "specialist public order officers", but also withdrew from the scene after coming under "a barrage of bricks and missiles from a large group".
