British actress Barbara Leigh-Hunt, whose film and TV career spanned more than five decades, has died at her home in Warwickshire, her family has said.

Barbara, who began her career on the stage and won an Olivier Award for her performance at the National Theatre in An Inspector Calls in 1993, was best known on screen for her roles in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1972 thriller Frenzy, the historical drama Henry VIII and His Six Wives and as the vice principal in Billy Elliot.

She was married to actor Richard Pasco, who died in 2014, and was also close friends with Dame Judi Dench and her late husband, Michael Williams, and is godmother to their daughter Finty.

Barbara was born in Bath in 1935, and began her stage career at the Bristol Old Vic, before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company.
