The First Kirkcudbright Scout Group enjoyed sunshine and laughter at Galloway Activity Centre where they were put through their paces in the water.

The session was funded by Loch Ken Trust and was aimed at teaching the youngsters all about water safety whilst undertaking a paddleboarding activity.

They gained new skills by rescuing a person who had fallen off their paddleboard, learnt how the changes in weather can affect their time on the water, the difference between lifejackets and buoyancy aids, how to manoeuvre the board and the dangers of cross winds.

The training was vital to the Scouts who will be visiting Wales this year for a trip which will involve sailing. It is also incredibly important for them to understand the dangers of the water around them, but that water activities can be great fun too when approached sensibly and with awareness of the risks.
