Sam Mendes

Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE (born 1 August 1965) is an English film and stage director, producer and screenwriter. In theatre, he is known for his dark re-inventions of the stage musicals Cabaret (1994), Oliver! (1994), Company (1995), and Gypsy (2003). He directed an original West End stage musical for the first time with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2013).

For directing the play The Ferryman, Mendes was awarded the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play in 2019.

Jez Butterworth’s ‘The Hills of California’ Sets Fall Broadway Engagement; Sam Mendes Directs

The Hills of California, the first new play by Jez Butterworth‘s since his acclaimed The Ferryman in 2017, will open on Broadway this fall, reuniting the playwright with director Sam Mendes.

The Hills of California will begin a limited engagement at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre with previews beginning Wednesday, September 11, with an opening night set for Sunday, September 29.

The announcement was made today by Sonia Friedman Productions, No Guarantees Productions, Neal Street, Brian Spector, and Sand & Snow Entertainment, with Stephanie P.

McClelland. Broadway casting for The Hills of California will be announced at a later date. The production is currently playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre on the West End, where it will conclude its limited engagement on Saturday, June 15.
