A former Emmerdale star is set for major surgery and has shared a snap from his hospital bed. Matthew Wolfenden, known for his role as David Metcalfe on the hit ITV soap, has revealed to fans that he's facing an operation this week, coming shortly after confirmation that his character won't be making a comeback to the Dales.

The 43 year old actor, who graced our screens from 2006 until his exit last year, was last seen in the village in November. Since leaving the soap, Matthew has been treading the boards in the stage production of Elf and keeping his followers in the loop with his life post-Emmerdale via Instagram.

On Tuesday 16 April, he shared with his fans that he was in hospital prepping for surgery. In the Instagram post, Matthew, who separated from his wife Charlie Webb last year, told his followers about his impending knee surgery, posting a picture that seemed to show him waiting in a hospital bed, captioning it: "Ready to go down for surgery on my knee." He stopped short of sharing more details about his condition, reports the Mirror.

This news comes just weeks after Emmerdale referenced his character David following his departure from the show last year. In September, it was announced that he had chosen to leave the series after a successful stint of over 15 years on set.
