Cruise ship passengers visiting the Greek island of Santorini may have to pay higher disembarkation fees as the government cracks down on ‘overtourism’.

The government is planning new legislation to increase charges for tourists arriving on cruise ships, according to a local news site.

The move is to counterbalance the “burden of a rapid increase in visitors in recent years” particularly for the island of Santorini, Greek news site ekathimerini.com reports.

The publication said that one government official shared that the fee “cannot be lower than 10 euros for Santorini”. It could also apply to the island of Mykonos.
