A Salford councillor who sparked controversy and calls for his resignation after winning a seat 160 miles away in the Cotswolds has finally revealed when he will give up his seat on the city council - nine months after winning the seat and moving to the wealthy Tetbury with Upton constituency in Gloucestershire.
At the time, Coun Chris Twells told his colleagues on Salford City Council that he was merely a "paper candidate" for the Cotswolds seat, which also contains King Charles III's country manor Highgrove House within its border.
However, he won the traditionally Conservative seat in March 2023, by 267 votes to 207 for the Liberal Democrats. Despite his claim that he was merely a stand-in candidate, Coun Twells moved out of his Ordsall seat in Salford and moved to sit as an independent on Cotswold District Council later that year.
Although he has been sitting more than 100 miles away, Twells is adamant that he has remained on top of his casework in Salford, though he has also faced calls to resign from Salford Mayor Paul Dennett. Try MEN Premium now for FREE...
