Former The Great British Bake Off host Sandi Toksvig has shared the distressing details of needing security on her wedding day due to a barrage of death threats.
The 66-year-old and her wife, Debbie Toksvig, tied the knot in 2014, but their celebration of love was met with concerns, due to abuse about their sexuality.
Speaking out about the difficulties she's faced by being gay, she said: "Oh, some people get very cross about you living your life in something other than what's perceived as the norm. "When my wife and I did our formal marriage vows at the Festival Hall 2014, we had to have close protection police." After Rosebud podcast host Gyles Brandreth suggested the ordeal must've been "distressing", Sandi added: "Well, there's a lot of intemperate language used at the moment, particularly on social media. "People having a go at marginalised groups and it has a knock-on effect all around." Delving further into her personal experiences, she continued: "So yeah, it's you know, I've had some really detailed death threats," reports Wales Online.
Sandi, who has three children with her former partner Peta Stewart, said abuse began at a time when there were "no out women in showbusiness at all".
