Google said that it will require election advertisers to disclose when their spots include content that has been “digitally altered or generated,” including via the use of artificial intelligence.
The announcement comes amid increasing concerns over the ability of AI to manipulate candidate images and statements in advance of the 2024 presidential election.
When President Joe Biden announced his reelection campaign, the Republican National Committee responded with an AI-generated ad that imagined a dystopian future if he had another term.
A Google spokesperson said, “Given the growing prevalence of tools that produce synthetic content, we’re expanding our policies a step further to require advertisers to disclose when their election ads include material that’s been digitally altered or generated.” The spokesperson said that the policy would “further support responsible political advertising and provide voters with the information they need to make informed decisions.” The policy is for candidates running for office or for ballot measures, not those on general political issues.
