Good Morning Britain viewers have been left horrified over their breakfasts, as a plane crash survivor spoke about surviving by eating his deceased friends – but admitted that was not the worst part of his 72-day ordeal.
Dr Roberto Canessa, now 71 and a paediatric cardiologist, was one of 16 survivors of a 1972 plane crash that saw Uruguayan Flight 571 veer off course in dense fog on the way to Santiago, Chile, and crash into the snowy Andes mountains.
Roberto, then 19, was travelling with his university friends from their rugby team and the group realised that in order to stay alive, they would have to do the unthinkable and eat their friends who had been killed in the crash.
He said: "I learned that in life when you want something, you have to just face where you're going and what you have to do. I had to do what I did and I have dedicated my life to helping people after that." But viewers were shocked by the nightmarish tale, which has been adapted into 1993 film Alive and 2023's Society of the Snow, especially when Roberto explained eating his friends was not the worst thing that had happened on the mountains.
