Glasgow's Lord Provost installed lamp posts outside home at cost of £17K

The Lord Provost of Glasgow installed two traditional lamp posts outside his West End home using over £17,000 of public funds, leaving neighbours furious.Locals have criticised Jacqueline McLaren, who is also an SNP councillor for the Canal Ward in Milton, for 'wasting' council funds after it came to light that the street outside the property was dug up to install the ceremonial lamps.

They are a long-held tradition in Glasgow to mark the 'unique' role of lord provost. Glasgow City Council spent £17,353.32 on the work, which included resurfacing the pavement outside Councillor McLaren's home, according to a freedom of information request (FOI) shared with Glasgow Live.Resident Diane McGinley, who lives a few streets away from the Provost, noticed the work going on during the school run.

She said she believed it was linked to infrastructure upgrades, leaving her feeling "disgusted" after noticing the work had been undertaken to install decorative lamp posts instead.

She said: "I had first thought they were installing fibre (broadband) on the street, because they had dug up a large section of the pavement.
