Gartcosh Primary pupils launch active travel project to reduce congestion around school

Pupils at Gartcosh Primary have been putting their best foot forward and taking action to improve road safety around their school.

The school launched a campaign entitled March into Spring to encourage families to walk, scoot or cycle to class and to reduce traffic and congestion on busy Lochend Road.Their junior road safety officers (JRSOs) are conducting twice-daily traffic surveys and senior pupils are writing to councillors requesting improvements – while all pupils have been enthusiastically joining in with the active travel project to earn special badges and by taking part in a selfie challenge.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

The road safety officers are then completing daily surveys to find out how pupils travelled, with a range of specially-designed badges and stickers on offer until the summer holidays with a bronze award going to those who use active travel 20 times, followed by silver for 40 and a gold badge for 60.
