Love it or hate it, the M60 Orbital Ring Road has revolutionised travel in the region. A loop of over 36-miles of motorway, it passes through most of Greater Manchester's metropolitan boroughs except for Wigan and Bolton.

The M60 also holds the title of being the UK's only true circular motorway - that being one with no start and no end, a claim not even the M25 around London can make, according to UK road network website, roads.org.uk.

The truth is, the M60 is actually a patchwork of older motorways around the fringes of Manchester. The circular road was completed in 2000 - when existing sections of the M63, M62, and the M66 were connected up with the completion of what is now Junctions 19-24 of the M60. Usage of the M60 has grown year on year, rising from an average of 112,000 vehicles in 2002 to 124,000 in 2015. Regular users of the motorway will be familiar with at least some of its landmarks, which include historic buildings, bridges, and even a mysterious advertising hoarding.
