The Foreign Secretary, Lord David Cameron, is visiting Israel following the announcement of a truce in the war with Hamas, the Government said today.

But news of the former prime minister's arrival came amid growing uncertainty about when the pause in fighting will begin, with reports today suggesting the agreement for a four-day ceasefire in Gaza appears to have hit a last-minute snag.

A senior Israeli official said it would not take effect before Friday, a day later than originally expected. The deal will see the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, with Palestinian prisoners expected to be freed by Tel Aviv. The diplomatic breakthrough promised some relief for more than 1.7 million Palestinians who have fled their homes under weeks of Israeli bombardment, as well as families in Israel fearful over the fate of loved ones captured during Hamas’ October 7 attack that triggered the war.
