After a scathing report found the NHS was 'in a critical condition', the Government has today pledged to create a 10-year plan to turn things around.

The rapid review, completed in nine weeks by surgeon Lord Darzi, argues the NHS is facing rising demand for care as people live longer in ill health, coupled with low productivity in hospitals and poor staff morale.

Thousands of lives are lost or put at risk because people cannot get the care they need – or wait too long – in hospitals, while thousands more struggle to access GP appointments.

But despite concluding that the NHS 'is in critical condition', there is still hope of turning things around. Its 'vital signs are strong', says Lord Darzi, there is an 'extraordinary depth of clinical talent' and staff have a 'shared passion and determination to make the NHS better for our patients'.
