The new £29.5m Scots bridge that will connect Govan and Partick was seen for the first time today after sailing up the River Clyde by barge. It took around a week for the impressive structure to get to Scotland as it left Westdorpe in the Netherlands on October 7 after being constructed in Belgium. The span of the bridge was then transported along canals to Holland at which point the pylon and cabling were installed just before making its final journey to the Clyde estuary before heading up the river report Glasgow Live.It was fabricated in two parts: the moving span, which is 99 metres long and will be used at the South Pier (at Water Row) as its access; and the fixed span, which weighs 45 tonnes and is 15.7 metres long. The moving span will be put in place next week - if the weather permits - after a set-up period for the lifting crane.

The fixed span will be kept in storage until works on the North Pier and northern approach works are complete, and then installed in the summer of 2024 to complete the project. In total the £29.5million project includes the construction of a new pedestrian/cycle bridge over the River Clyde between Water Row in Govan and Pointhouse Quay in Partick, re-establishing the historic connection between the areas.Over 100 construction jobs will be supported through the project, and significant community benefits will be delivered, including starts for 11 new employees; five new apprentices and a new graduate; school mentoring. The bridge will be monumental in creating a link between communities, visitor attractions, and institutions of national economic importance, and is also a central part of the active travel route between the University of Glasgow’s campus at Gilmorehill and the Queen Elizabeth
