A family face being forced out of their home in a matter of days following a dad's decision to retire. Thomas Gillespie, 66, has spent more than 24 years working as a caretaker at a Merseyside primary school.
He has lived at a property on the school grounds throughout that time along with his wife Marie, 57. The house was provided as part of the job under service occupancy, and the couple have been raising their 13-year-old son at the property.
Thomas believes that Sefton Council had previously provided alternative accommodation for retired caretakers when leaving their roles, the Liverpool Echo reports.
But after first discussing his retirement from Linacre Primary School in Bootle five years ago, Thomas insists he has been "passed from pillar to post", and now his family are facing the prospect of losing their home. A letter from the school, seen by the Echo, states the couple can now remain in the caretaker's house until 4pm on Monday, September 4.
