The number of people being treated in Dumfries and Galloway’s hospitals for alcohol-related conditions fell last year. But the number of admissions to psychiatric hospitals is at its highest for a decade.

The figures from Public Health Scotland show there were 708 alcohol-related hospital admissions in the region in 2022/23 – down from 732 the year before.

That’s the equivalent of 483.2 stays per 100,000 people. Of those admissions, 630 were to general acute hospitals, with 597 of those emergency stays.

The previous year there were 657 admissions to general acute hospitals. But the figures also show that there were 78 alcohol-related admissions to psychiatric hospitals in 2022/23.
