Dumfries and Galloway’s curlers hopes of a second successive world title were ended at the semi-final stage. Kirkgunzeon’s Grant Hardie and Stranraer duo Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan Jnr, as well as skip Bruce Mouat, represented Scotland in the World Men’s Curling Championship in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
They finished third in the group with an impressive record of 10 wins and two losses. That put them into Saturday’s play-offs, with an 8-4 victory over the USA putting them through to the semi-finals against Canada later in the day.
It was a tight game, with the teams tied at 3-3 after five ends. But in the sixth end, Mouat’s final attempt came up short and Canada snatched a 6-3 lead, which they converted into a 9-4 victory to make the final.
The Scots had the consolation of the bronze medal match against Italy on Sunday. And they were in good shape with a 4-2 lead after the seventh end and a 6-3 advantage after nine ends.
