Experts at a UK hospital have issued an urgent warning about a new TikTok trend called "sunburning", which they say could cause cancer.Doctors in Sussex have spoken out about the dangerous so-called skin "cure", which involves influencers encouraging people to expose their skin to the sun as a health boost - without protective sunscreen.

Some even recommend that their followers go as far as intentionally burning their skin to "heal" acne and other dermatological conditions, or just to give you a "healthy" glow.

Greatest Hits Radio Sussex reports that doctors at the The Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead have warned against participating in the trend, telling TikTok users that failing to use sunscreen can cause severe sunburn, which in turn increases the risk of deadly skin cancer such as melanoma. .Sam Orkar, Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Clinical Director of the hospital’s plastics and burns services, told the local radio station: "Social media trends such as this not only pose an immediate danger but have the potential to cause lifelong health issues for those that follow them."Melanoma is the fifth most common type of cancer and nationally numbers are on the increase."Please can we encourage everyone to be safe in the sun and look after your skin and remember there are safer ways to treat acne than putting yourself at risk through unprotected sun exposure.”Around four people are diagnosed with melanoma each day in Scotland and the numbers are predicted to soar to a record of about 1800 cases this year.
