It’s do or die time for Dalbeattie Star this weekend. The Islecroft side head to Edinburgh University knowing defeat would all but relegate them from the Lowland League.

After drawing with Celtic's youngsters on Wednesday, Star will head into the game three points behind the students with four games to go, with their rivals having played a game more.

Star boss Eddie Warwick said: “I don’t think we can afford to lose the game, a draw wouldn’t be the nail in the coffin as we’d have three to play and they have two to play, but we need to go and win. “It’s up to having the right attitude and application on the day. “First of all we’ve got Celtic on Wednesday, it’s a really difficult game before the weekend which ideally you don’t want but postponed fixtures have dictated when you play. “Hopefully we can have a few bodies back but we could be six or seven light, which we have been for the last few games. “I’m not bemoaning that as every team has injuries and defeats but we have a very small budget with a very small group of players. “You’ve got a clear gap between starting 11 and bench players and other teams have a better depth.” Saturday was another bad day for Star as they were thumped 6-0 by a Cowdenbeath side only a few places – and also 30 points – better off in the table.

Dean Ritchie fired Cowdenbeath into the lead which was quickly doubled by Michael Cunningham. And when Sam Young headed in a free-kick it looked like there would be no way back for Star – something that was confirmed when Dan Watt got the fourth before the break.
