Dame Edna star Barry Humphries dies aged 89

So much did Humphries subsume his own identity into that of his larger-than-life creation that he even had her write a disparaging spoof tribute to himself for The Telegraph, in which Dame Edna described him as “merely a footnote to my spectacular career”.
That was typical of the comic, who fellow professionals have lauded as one the finest practitioners of his craft. Humphries had been undergoing treatment in hospital for some weeks after breaking his hip in his Sydney apartment while reaching for a book and falling over.
The actor, comic and voracious reader had been convalescing in the rehabilitation unit of Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital when his condition deteriorated.
His fourth wife, Lizzie Spender, and four children from previous marriages, had been at his bedside for much of the past week.
