Reports that Australian entertainer Barry Humphries is in an "unresponsive" state at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney have been denied by the hospital.
Multiple local media outlets had previously reported on Thursday that Barry had suffered complications following hip surgery and was unresponsive, receiving morphine from doctors.
However, a spokesperson for the hospital has now told the PA news agency the reports were “not accurate” and that “he remains stable in the hospital in the best hands.” The 89 year old, best known for his on-stage and television alter egos Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, as well as Sandy Stone, has been a prominent figure in the British comedy scene, alongside Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett and Spike Milligan, since he moved to London in 1959.
Over his 70-year career, Barry has been a writer and performer, a film producer, scriptwriter, star of London’s West End musical theatre, and a landscape painter.
