I've got a mate who used to scoff at the idea of people moving to London 'for the culture'. 'Into your opera are you?', he'd ask, eyebrow raised.

Now I'm not into my opera. I've been once - at Sydney Opera House, no less - but left at the interval because I was bored out of my mind.

But that doesn't mean I'm not happy that the English National Opera is upping sticks from London to make Greater Manchester its 'main home' by 2029.

Chances are I'll never go, but the fact that such a renowned cultural institution is going to become so much more accessible for such a large part of the country is surely cause for celebration.
