UK landlines will have their services cut as BT aims to encourage its customers to upgrade to a more modern version. After the shutdown, traditional copper landlines will be phased out within a year, encouraging people to adopt new broadband-based technology.
Stonehaven and Cupar are among the 46 exchanges to be affected, with approximately 344,000 homes set to make the switch. The news comes as BT have said the upgrade will provide better phone quality and protection against spam.
However, according to the Express, the implementation of the rollout has faced challenges including people losing their phone numbers as well as vulnerability to power cuts and internet outages.BT plan to switch off the current analogue phone line platform by the end of December next year.
However, before the deadline, people in the UK will need to have upgraded to a digital phone line. For people who have already upgraded to a full-fibre broadband plan, their landline will already use the “Voice Over IP” (VoIP) technology. In response to concerns about the compatibility of the switch with personal alarms used by by 1.8 million elderly Brits, new government rules will force broadband and phone providers to carry out extra checks for those forced to make the move.Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan forced leading telecoms firms, including Sky, BT, Virgin Media, O2 and TalkTalk is said to be ensuring people have the devices they need and support where necessary.By 2025, the government aims to achieve 85 percent gigabit broadband coverage, with complete nationwide coverage expected by 2030.
