Body in River Roch 'first spotted by person waiting at traffic lights'

A body in a river in Rochdale town centre was first spotted by a person waiting at a set of traffic lights, the Manchester Evening News understands.

The body was spotted in the River Roch near St Mary's Gate at around 6.30am this morning (Wednesday). Emergency services were then alerted.

St Mary's Gate remains shut both ways between Dane Street and College Road. Traffic is building around the closure, with drivers urged to avoid the area if possible.
