Blackpool South by-election 2024 candidates list in full
manchestereveningnews.co.ukA by-election to elect a new MP for Blackpool South will be held on the same day as the local elections. Voters in the Lancashire constituency will get to have their say on who represents them in Parliament, choosing from nine candidates.
The by-election is being held after former Conservative MP Scott Benton resigned from his post in the wake of a lobbying scandal earlier this year.
In February, Mr Benton was suspended from the House of Commons for 35 days for breaching Commons rules after he was filmed by The Times offering to lobby ministers and table parliamentary questions on behalf of gambling investors. READ MORE: Full list of local elections 2024 and mayoral votes taking across UK in May Mr Benton, who won the seat in December 2019 with a majority of 3,690, announced in March that he would quit Parliament rather than wait for the outcome of a recall petition.
After the allegations surfaced, he was stripped of the Tory whip and sat as an independent. Labour's candidate Chris Webb has been tipped to gain the marginal seat, which would be the Tories’ 11th such defeat so far this parliament.
