An expert has shared what drinks you should avoid if you're on an intermittent fasting diet. Also known as Time Restricted Eating (TRE), these weight-loss plans involve eating in certain time frames throughout the day, followed by extended periods without eating - causing the body to burn excess fat stores.According to experts, in order for it to be beneficial it's not just what you eat that impacts intermittent fasting, but also what you drink.

It turns out that even drinks low in calories like diet sodas and some types of coffee should be avoided, as they can ruin your fasting efforts.“Many beverages have calories that can break your fast, trigger an insulin response, and prevent your body from going into autophagy, which is one of the benefits of fasting," dietician Ana Reisdorf told Women's Health. Most drinks contain far fewer calories than food, so it's understandable to think they won't make a difference in dieting, but even consuming just a few units of energy is enough to break a fast.

However, hydration is important especially when you're fasting and there are plenty of drinks that won't impact efforts.According to nutrition and diabetes expert Erin Palinski-Wade, black coffee is perfectly fine to drink during fasting, but if you add sugar or milk, it's a different story. It's not just high milk frappes, lattes and cappuccinos that should be avoided, as Erin said even a drop of milk or a spoon of sugar can take you out of your fasting.

Instead, she recommends adding calorie free spices to spruce up your brew.As reported by Women's Health, she said: “If you do want to flavour your coffee during a fast, experiment with calorie-free flavouring from a spice like cinnamon.
