In the just-under four years since the release of his last full-length album, Detroit rapper Veeze has become something of a folk hero for his unwillingness to release new music even when a leak or snippet sends his base into a frenzy. There have been signs of increased focus over the past year: the well-recieved single "GOMD" which got a Lil Uzi Vert remix, and a big nationwide tour with Babyface Ray and Shawny Binladen.

Ethan Shanfeld Before Paul McCartney even took his seat, he was greeted with rapturous applause and an instant standing ovation at Tribeca Festival. And, in case anyone still doubted whether he still got it, he asked the crowd politely, “I’d like to hear all the girls do a Beatles scream, please,” resulting in a shriek so loud it sent shockwaves back to 1964. McCartney joined Conan O’Brien at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center Thursday evening to promote his new book, a collection of unearthed photographs titled “1964: Eyes of the Storm.” Between 1963 and 1964, McCartney took 275 photos on a 35mm camera, documenting the Beatles’ incredible rise in Europe and first visit to America, including their historic performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” McCartney thought he lost the photos, he told the audience, until a photo archivist in London recovered them in 2020. Of course, the “storm” referenced in the title of the book is Beatlemania, with a young McCartney pointing his lens out from the center of it.

Naman Ramachandran Stage, television and film star Anjana Vasan’s latest role is the lead in the “Demon 79” episode in Season 6 of Charlie Brooker’s hit Netflix series “Black Mirror.” Set in northern England, 1979, Vasan plays a meek sales assistant who is told she must commit terrible acts to prevent disaster in the episode written by Brooker and Bisha K. Ali (“Ms. Marvel”) and directed by Toby Haynes (“Andor”). Paapa Essiedu (“Gangs of London”) has a pivotal role in the episode. “Every episode of ‘Black Mirror’ is different but this one felt just distinctly like trying to do something different,” Vasan told Variety. “And when I read it, I was genuinely surprised. I didn’t know where the story was going to go. And I thought the dynamic between Paapa’s character and myself was so interesting and so surprising. I just wanted to be a part of that world, I wanted to go into 1979 and just explore her journey.”

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Pete Docter, Pixar’s creative chief officer, is hoping the animation studio’s 27th release, “Elemental,” will draw families to movie theaters this weekend. Peter Sohn‘s film is a story about immigration, families, duty and love. Not only does Docter say the visuals are “a spectacle,” but believes it should be experienced with an audience. Docter, who has been with the studio since the beginning and was upped to CCO in 2018, has come under criticism recently that Pixar has lost its magic touch. Here, Docter sits down with Variety over Zoom to discuss Pixar’s approach to programming, Cannes, “Elemental,” and what’s next for the studio.
