Miya Cech (Surfside Girls, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah) has landed the key role of fan-favorite Earthbender, Toph, in the upcoming second season of Netflix‘s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, which has started production.

The casting was unveiled at Netflix’s Geeked Week live event Thursday with a teaser, which you can watch below. Ever since Avatar: The Last Airbender was renewed for Seasons 2 and 3 by Netflix, fans have been buzzing about the role of the powerful, tiny Earthbender Toph Beifong, with some calling the casting decision a make-or-break for the series as Toph is considered one of the most important, beloved characters of the franchise.

To find a young Asian actor for the blind teen character, Netflix in June launched an Open Casting Call, which encouraged blind and low vision performers to submit.

Here is how the Toph character was described in the Casting Call: “She is sassy, confident and unfiltered. For most of her life her strength and formidable earthbending skills have been suppressed, but now on the run as the Avatar’s earthbending master she is uninhibited to become the fierce warrior she believes she is inside.” Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world that is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. “Benders” are people that have the ability to telekinetically manipulate and control the element corresponding to their nation, using gestures based on Chinese martial arts.
