Like the Japanese with their Godzilla movies, the Koreans are partial to a bit of post-apocalyptic social satire, and Um Tae-Hwa’s box office hit Concrete Utopia follows a path trailblazed in 2013 by Bong Joon-ho’s cult sci-fi Snowpiercer. Adapted from the popular webtoon Pleasant Outcast by Kim Soong Nyung and partly inspired by British writer J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel High-Rise, it centers on a Korean apartment block whose residents become lawless after a terrifying earthquake rips through the country.

Chicken Nugget. The streaming platform released several stills on March 14 from the show teasing special appearances from a number of familiar faces, including Squid Game‘s Jung Ho-yeon and GOT7‘s Jinyoung, who previously starred in Yumi’s Cells and The Devil Judge. Helmed by Lee Byung-heon (Extreme Job), Chicken Nugget is billed as a comedy-mystery series following Choi Sun-man (Ryu Seung-ryong) as he tries to bring back his daughter, Min-ah (Kim Yoo-jung), after she was turned into a chicken nugget.

Korean actress Lee Young-ae, known for her roles in Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area and Lady Vengeance, will be presented with the Excellence in Asian Cinema Award at this year’s Asian Film Awards (March 10) in Hong Kong.

Rakuten Viki, which specializes in Asian content, has licensed exclusive rights to the film in the U.S. and Canada and will begin streaming it to North American audiences from Friday.

Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk has discussed what fans can look forward to in season 2 of the hit series, which has been filming for months now.Speaking to press during a tour of the Squid Game set, Hwang shared, per Korea Herald, that the upcoming season “will feature new games and characters, as well as a deeper plot and message.”“We have been filming the second season of Squid Game since July with the interest and support of many viewers,” Hwang said, adding: “We are burdened with the pressure to do well, but we will make sure to repay viewers with a good result.”Squid Game art director Chae Kyung-sun echoed his sentiment, adding that she feels “heavy pressure to live up to expectations,” and that the art team is “working hard to realise [Hwang’s] vision and the series’ theme,” per Yonhap News Agency.At the time of publishing, Netflix has not announced a release date for season two of Squid Game. Badland Hunters.Netflix has announced that it has greenlit production on its the upcoming film. Badland Hunters. The movie will be led by Eternals star Ma Dong-seok along with Lee Hee-jun, Lee Jun-young and Roh Jeong-eui.The film, which has been in talks since at least 2022, is reportedly set in the universe of disaster-thriller Concrete Utopia starring Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-joon and Park Bo-young, which was released earlier this year.According to Netflix, Ma stars in the post-apocalyptic film as Nam-san, a wasteland hunter in a decimated Seoul after a devastating earthquake.

Squid Game actor Lee Byung-hun has revealed that the popular Netflix K-drama series was originally planned to only have one season.Lee, who played Front Man in the first season of the show, recently spoke to South Korean media about the upcoming second season of Squid Game. Netflix announced an upcoming thriller Korean series, The Bequeathed, to be written by Train To Busan and Hellbound director Yeon Sang-ho.South Korean news outlet Yonhap News Agency reported yesterday (October 18) that Netflix had decided to produce the brand-new series written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho. The streaming platform also announced the casting of actors Kim Hyun-joo (Trolley, Love All Play) and Park Hee-soon (A Model Family, My Name) in lead roles for The Bequeathed.

Netflix has announced the cast for its forthcoming K-drama, Dak Gang Jeong (literal title).According to a report by South Korean media outlet Asian Economy, the streaming platform’s newest Korean series is set to star Kim Yoo-jung (Lovers of the Red Sky), Ahn Jae-hong (Be Melodramatic) and Ryu Seung-ryong (Jirisan).ASTRO’s Cha Eun-woo was reportedly in talks to join the cast, but no decision has been reached regarding this offer at the time of publication.Based on a webtoon named after a Korean chicken dish, Dak Gang Jeong is a comedy surrounding a machine that turns people into fried chicken. Kim is set to play Min Ah, a girl who is turned into fried chicken after mistaking the machine for one that helps people with fatigue.Ryu will be playing Choi Sun-man, a father who will do anything to reverse the machine’s effects on his daughter; while Ahn will be playing Go Baek-joon, an intern with a crush on Min Ah.Dak Gang Jeong will be helmed by Lee Byung-hun, who has previously worked with several members of the cast—namely Ryu on the 2019 film Extreme Job and Ahn on 2019 K-drama Be Melodramatic.
