Woman killed after 'parking car on M6 hard shoulder' before she was hit by tanker

Emergency services were called to the scene of the horror crash on the northbound carriageway near Wigan, close to the exit junction 27 in Appley Bridge, to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a red Volvo heavy goods tanker.
Police and paramedics attended and the woman, aged 54, was pronounced dead at the scene. A huge closure was put in place and remained for 12 hours amid ongoing investigations. It is understood that the woman had parked her silver Volkswagen Golf on the hard shoulder of the motorway just moments before she was struck.
Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by police currently. The driver of the tanker remained at the scene and is assisting Merseyside Police with their enquiries.
