People have been warned not to rely on smartphones for directions when out walking in the countryside after a man had to be rescued in the Lake District.

More than 70 people were involved in a rescue operation after he became lost in treacherous conditions. The mountain rescue team said the walker was “very, very fortunate” to survive.

He got into trouble on the ridge between Scafell Pike and Great End. The first call for help was made at 6.30pm on Monday, however he was not located until 2.30pm the next day due to poor weather conditions, reports WalesOnline.
