The world-renowned architect who designed Salford's iconic Lowry arts centre and theatre has died aged 84. Bosses at The Lowry and civic leaders have paid tribute to the life and work of Michael Wilford CBE, saying his vision would 'live on forever through the beautiful building he created'.

The Salford Quays complex opened at Pier 8 in April 2000, with the late Queen Elizabeth II presiding over an official ceremony in the October.

Surrey-born father-of-five Mr Wilford, who formed a renowned architecture business and partnership with James Stirling, passed away on March 10.

In a tweet, the Lowry said: "The Lowry is saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Wilford CBE, the architect who designed our wonderful and iconic building.
