Jason Mongan, 27, a traveller from Leicestershire, was only caught by police following a 100mph chase through Stockport. The father of three was part of a gang of four car thieves who were touring the suburbs of south Manchester and Stockport in a Mercedes, armed with a trolley jack, an electric drill and an electric saw to remove catalytic converters from parked vehicles.

Today (Wednesday) he walked free from court after a judge imposed a jail term equivalent to the four months he had already spent in custody
