The new laws announced in the the King's Speech and how they will affect you

King Charles has unveiled the first things the new Labour government will do now that it is in power. In total, 40 pieces of legislation were announced in the King's Speech on Wednesday (July 17).

This includes plans to bring rail services under public ownership, setting up a state-owned clean energy company and changing planning laws so more houses can be built.

Labour's legislative programme also includes some bills originally put forward by the last Conservative government. This includes a smoking ban to stop anyone born after 2008 from buying cigarettes and new vape regulations affecting flavours and packaging. READ MORE: What's in the King's Speech?

The 40 laws Labour want to pass Martyn's Law, named after a Manchester Arena bombing victim, has also been included in the King's Speech.
