On first glance, stepping into the Fox and Pine pub in the centre of Oldham is a bit like walking into a quirky antique’s shop full of nick nacks and oddities.

Everywhere you look, there are signs, puppets, pots, and a large number of foxes dotted around every part of the walls. It's anything but subtle.

On a midweek afternoon, trade at the Fox and Pine is steady. There’s a woman celebrating her 25th birthday with a pint and a pie, an alleged chess genius enjoying his Guinness, a woman referred to by staff as ‘Manchester’s Cinderella’ having a drink with a friend, and a man in work uniform who has, quite literally, ordered a beer and downed it all within the space of three minutes before apparently heading back to his job nearby.

The comings-and-goings of the venue from people of all walks of life suggests the pub, which is tucked behind the Lyceum Theatre on Greaves Street, has been part and parcel of the borough's furniture for decades - but that’s far from the truth.
