A cleaning guru has revealed that a simple item many people have in their cupboards can help destroy the existence of bed bugs in their homes.Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, will make the bugs dehydrate and cause them to die off, making it a simple DIY method to get rid of them, reports Wales Online.Nigel Bearmen, owner of cleaning company Daily Poppins, told the Metro: "The small granules of baking soda can also cause internal bleeding due to the fact that they can cut into a bed bug’s shell."According to Rentokil, baking soda is a popular homemade solution that people use to get rid of bed bugs.

One of the many DIY methods used to destroy them includes sprinkling the white powder around key areas the bed bugs typically inhabit, such as the mattress and around the bed.After a few days, you’re supposed to vacuum it up and repeat the process.

However it’s important to remember that baking soda may not get rid of a bed bug infestation completely.Baking soda is thought to take out all of the fluids on the waxy layer of a bed bug's shell, causing them to shrivel up from dehydration and die.
