A prison officer has been found guilty of perjury but a colleague has been cleared of the same allegation. The two former Strangeways officers allegedly gave false information during the inquest into the death of a man in custody, prosecutors claimed.
Minshull Street Crown Court previously heard that John Edward Ahmed was a remand inmate at HMP Manchester when he died on July 29, 2015, following a 'restraint incident' in the prison’s segregation unit.
An inquest was held into his death in 2017, it was said. Mr Ahmed came to the attention of police officers whilst out in the exercise yard when he was passed a package, it was said.
That morning Mr Ahmed was taken to an empty cell so that he could be searched in relation to the package. He became stressed and agitated and it was decided that he needed to be restrained, the court heard.
