Steven Davis began his weekend watching Europe take a massive step towards Ryder Cup glory and ended it with a phone call teeing him up to take over at Ibrox. Now the challenge for Rangers’ new caretaker gaffer is to get the squad left behind by Michael Beale back in full swing.
The 38-year-old admits he’s been left a little dizzy by the turn of events over the past five days. On Saturday he was in Rome cheering on Luke Donald’s side as Team Europe put on a golf masterclass on their way to a thrilling victory over America at the Marco Simone. But he’s now set to swap the fairways for the touchline at Aris Limassol’s Alphamega Stadium after being drafted in to replace Beale.
It’s fair to say the former Northern Ireland skipper has been left with a lie definitely on the dodgy side as he takes his first steps into coaching. He’s inheriting a squad devastated by injuries and shorn of confidence following a disastrous start to the season that has Celtic seven points clear.
And beating the Cypriots in Thursday night’s Europa League clash is certainly no gimmie. But Davis has been in Glasgow long enough to know pressure is par for the course at Ibrox and has vowed to do everything he can to hack the embattled Light Blues out of the rough they now find themselves in.
