Experts have confirmed part of Tameside was hit by a tornado last night believed to be the strongest in the UK in almost two decades - during which wind speeds could have topped 150mph.

Around 100 properties in the Carbrook and Millbrook areas of Stalybridge were damaged in Wednesday night's (December 27) incident, which hit at around 11:45pm.

Some properties saw their roofs completely ripped off, while the winds blew tiles and chimneys off others, as well as trees being uprooted and cars damaged by flying debris.

Thankfully no injuries were reported but a major incident was declared as emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the weather event, initially described by the police and local council chiefs as a 'localised' or 'mini' tornado.
