Sinéad O'Connor's cause of death has been confirmed - one year after the music icon died - aged just 56. The iconic Irish singer and activist, who struggled with her health for years, died from "exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low-grade lower respiratory tract infection," according to the Irish Independent.

Her death certificate showed her exact cause of death as a combination of differing health issues. Sinéad, who in 2021 reached out to several reality show producers with hopes of a comeback, died in July 2023.

At the time, a statement was released by her family. They said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” Sinéad is known to have suffered years of mental health battle - she said they were as a result of being physically and sexually abused by her mother as a child. The singer first shot to fame in 1990 with an emotional cover of Prince's song, Nothing Compares 2 U.Topping the charts around the world, Sinéad made the song memorable and her own with sad tones and emotional eye-to-camera shots in her music video. The simple, yet unforgettable, accompanying video featured almost nothing else but a close-up shot of the shaven-headed singer performing the ballad with tears rolling down her cheeks.

Her death came just a year and a half after the tragic death of her son, Shane. In January 2022, police in Ireland said they had recovered a body in the Bray area of Wicklow and their appeal for a missing teenager – Sinéad's son, Shane, 17 – had ended.
