Scots will be given a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of Uranus this evening. The planet was at its closest point to Earth, which is around 2.8 kilometres away, last night and this evening.
Experts say it will reach peak brightness for the year during this spell, the Mirror reports. When the planet gets closer to Earth, it hits what is known as ‘opposition’.This means that the Earth will be directly opposite the sun and will reflect the most light possible.Stargazers will have to look up above the horizon to see the planet, which be visible to the naked eye as a faint star.
Finding a viewing spot with as little light pollution as possible will make for a better outlook - though Bonfire Night celebrations could make this difficult.
