An Scots mum says her son's hidden disability often has people thinking he's "just not listening".Lynsey Houston's is hoping to raise awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) after her son was diagnosed with the condition in 2020.
The mum, from Edinburgh, had never previously heard of it but has since discovered that on average two children in every class at school are likely to have DLD.As reported by Edinburgh Live, the disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition which affects how the brain processes language.
Those with the condition can struggle to express how they're feeling and have difficulty processing information given to them.On Friday, Edinburgh Castle was lit up purple to raise awareness of DLD and to spread the message that the disability can affect people around the world regardless of age, gender, language or ethnicity.
Speaking on her son's condition, Lynsey said: "It’s a lifelong condition and impacts across all areas of communication. For my son, he can make himself understood in terms of speech but he has to be told things individually.
