Scotland's pavement parking ban comes into force - check your area's rules
dailyrecord.co.ukDrivers in Scotland have been warned that they could soon be slapped with a fine for parking on the pavement.Four years after the legislation received Royal Assent in 2019, the ban on pavement parking in Scotland has come into force today, December 11.
This gives councils the power to give out £100 fines for those caught breaking the rules and putting pedestrians at risk.However, not every council has immediate plans to introduce the ban, and some haven't got the ‘decriminalised parking enforcement’ (DPE) that's needed to enforce it.The Scottish Government has been working to improve parking rules in Scotland in order to tackle the impact of obstructive parking, making sure that roads and pavements are easily accessible for everyone.
As part of this work, the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019 bans pavement parking, double parking and parking at dropped kerbs, and gives local authorities the relevant powers to enforce these new provisions.
At the moment, Edinburgh looks set to be the first council to introduce the ban, which will come into force in January 2024.Some of Scotland's local authorities are expected to introduce the ban as early as January 2024, with many hoping to start enforcing the legislation at some point next year.
