A major change to the way we buy alcohol is set to come into force for the UK next year.People will soon be able to buy 'pint-sized' bottles of wine in shops, clubs, bars and restaurants in the UK thanks to new freedoms after the UK's exit from the European Union.These 568ml measures will be available for still and sparking wine, alongside the 200ml and 500ml sizes that are already common.
The change, which was announced by the Department of Business and Trade, is expected to benefit hundreds of vineyards and help to boost production.
A spokesperson from the government department has confirmed that the change will apply to Scotland. The extra size is also hoped to provide more choice and flexibility for customers.
The UK’s wine sector is set for the boost as part of the Government’s smarter regulation programme to ensure rules are up to date.The move comes after engagement with the wine industry, with businesses now being able to sell pre-packed still and sparkling wine in 500ml and 200ml sizes as well as a new 568ml ‘pint’ quantity.Pint bottles of Champagne were previously sold in the UK before Britain joined the European Common Market and were on shelves until 1973.
