A police watchdog has been ordered to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a missing man in the Highlands.
Donald Alexander Baxter McPhee was missing for five days before he was found dead in Fort William on March 8. The 30-year-old was reported missing to Police Scotland, with his last known sighting at 4.45pm on March 3 on Lundavra Road.At the time, officers were treating his death as unexplained.
Now, the Crown has ordered the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) to investigate the circumstances in the lead-up to Mr McPhee's death.
A Pirc spokesperson said: "We have been directed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to investigate the circumstances in the lead-up to the death of a 30-year-old man in Fort William whose body was found on 8 March, 2024. "Once the investigation is concluded, a report on our findings will be submitted to the COPFS."A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The circumstances have now been referred by Police Scotland to the Police Investigation and Review Commissioner.
