Perthshire music stalwart Allan Young surprised and honoured after being awarded MBE
dailyrecord.co.ukA stalwart of the region’s music scene was among those from Perth and Kinross recognised in the King’s New Year Honours List.Allan Young (61), from Luncarty, has spoken of his delight - and surprise - at being awarded an MBE for services to music.He has encouraged thousands of young local people to play a musical instrument and has provided an opportunity for them to learn and perform.Allan has also worked closely with charities that offer additional financial help for children who would otherwise be unable to afford instrumental tuition.As head of Perth and Kinross’ Instrumental Music Service (IMS) for over 21 years, he has - and continues to - ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in and benefit from music-making.His impressive influence on the Fair City music scene stretches back 40 years as both a tutor and conductor.He is a passionate conductor of Perth Youth Orchestra (PYO) - performing across the continent included - and Perth Symphony Orchestra (PSO).Despite his official post, he continues to be chief ‘roadie’ before and after every concert, driving the van extensively across Europe.His concerts bring whole families into the musical and cultural life of Perth, many for the first time.Some players go on to professional music careers built on the strong foundation of positive learning experiences.As a violinist with the City of Perth Sinfonia himself, and as director of the Ruthven Players at the Ruthven Music Festival, he continues to perform music at the highest standards.And he has staged an annual ChildLine Concert each year for the last 19 years.Reacting to his spot on the New Year Honours List, a very proud Allan told the Perthshire Advertiser: “There were a whole concoction of emotions -
